Canadian Screen Award Nominees in Documentary and Factual Categories

Docs share the wealth while Little Bird and BlackBerry top TV/film

24 mins read

The 2024 Canadian Screen Award nominations share the wealth on the documentary, non-fiction, and factual side of the awards. The Canadian Academy revealed its nominations today via a release with the film side of the documentaries seeing Beyond Paper and The Longest Goodbye in the lead with three nominations apiece, including Ted Rogers Best Feature Length Documentary. Also nominated for the top prize were Kite Zo A: Leave the Bones, Twice Colonized, and Someone Lives Here, which each received three nominations. Perhaps the biggest surprise among the film doc nominees is the cold shoulder given to Swan Song, which just won the Toronto Film Critics Association’s Rogers Best Canadian Documentary award. (Someone Lives Here was also a TFCA nominee.) The acclaimed ballet doc netted a single nomination for sound, despite being one of the most widely praised docs on the festival circuit this fall. Last year’s big Canadian Screen Award winner To Kill a Tiger is currently an Oscar nominee for Best Documentary Feature.

On the broadcast side, The Man Who Stole Einstein’s Brain scored six nominations including Best History Documentary Program or Series. That was followed by Black Community Mixtapes and Mr. Dressup: The Magic of Make-Believe, which both scored five nominations including Best Direction.

On the dramatic side, the Canadian Screen Awards scored massive hauls for BlackBerry, which scored 17 nominations including Best Picture. The dramedy by Matt Johnson won the Toronto Critics’ Rogers Best Canadian Film prize on Monday. Meanwhile, the Crave series Little Bird topped the nominations overall with a whopping 19 nominations including Best Series. Its companion doc Coming Home | Wanna Icipus Kupi also scored a nomination for the Donald Brittain Award for Best Social/Political Documentary to bring the Little Bird haul up to 20. Winners will be announced during Canadian Screen Week at the end of May with the big ceremony hosted by Mae Martin airing on Friday, May 31 at 8 PM (9 AT, 9:30 NT) on CBC and CBC Gem.
