Fire of Love

Fire of Love Leads Critics Choice Documentary Award Nominations

Winners will be announced on Nov. 13

10 mins read

Fire of Love leads the nominations for the seventh annual Critics Choice Documentary Awards. The volcanic archival doc directed by Sara Dosa scored seven nominations in the field kicking off award season to a very early start. Its nominations include Best Documentary Feature and Best Director. Good Night Oppy, directed by Ryan White, is on its heels with six nominations including feature and director. Brett Morgen’s Moonage Daydream and Daniel Roher’s Navalny round-out the top nominees with five citations each, including feature and director.

On the Canadian front, Nuisance Bear, directed by Jack Weisman and Gabriela Osio Vanden, made an impressive showing for a short doc. In addition to the shorts category, Nuisance Bear broke through to score nominations for Best Cinematography and Best Science/Nature Documentary.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the Critics Choice Documentary Awards nominations, however, was the cold shoulder given to Laura Poitras’ All the Beauty and the Bloodshed. Despite winning the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival—the second-ever win for a doc—Poitras’ film failed to land a nomination for Best Documentary Feature. It scored two nominations, for Best Director and Best Political Documentary. Also under-performing was festival heavy hitter All That Breathes, directed by Shaunak Sen. The film made history this year as the first documentary to win the top prize at both Sundance and Cannes, but scored only nominations for cinematography and science/nature doc with the Critics’ Choice.

Winners will be announced on November 13.
