Lives caught in limbo meet the eyes in the sky in The Sandbox. This provocative documentary observes what happens when human tragedies and experiences become monitored and judged by non-human observers. The Sandbox, directed by Kenya-Jade Pinto, observes the human costs of new technologies amid global migration patterns. POV has the first look at the trailer for The Sandbox ahead of its Vancouver International Film Festival and screening tour across Canada. The film previously debuted at CPH:DOX, Hot Docs, and DOXA.
Pinto makes a thoughtful feature directorial debut by considering what happens when technology replaces human intuition and empathy in the global migration crisis. The Sandbox looks at the dynamics of this global emergency from all angles to interrogate a new twist on an escalating problem. From volunteers on the ground in the desert searching for human remains to humanitarians performing rescue missions while navigating Libyan pirates on the Mediterranean Sea to the Big Brother figures cataloguing lives and making life-altering decisions for people half a world away, the film builds a portrait of a game in which borders seem to be dissolving for a powerful few, but erecting impenetrable barriers for others. It positions the current crisis as a consequence of a long game with many players.
“Some of the footage that we shot in the States was during a previous administration that, by all accounts, wasn’t right leaning,” Pinto told POV in a story from our Spring 2026 issue. “It requires the participation of so many different actors for this system to keep working, and that includes traditionally liberal institutions and governments as well. In the Canadian context, we’re not immune either. We have also participated in purchasing many of these border technologies as well. And so, we’re not so far away from what is happening. We’re certainly part of the broader system. The film offers an overview of the landscape that implicates a broad variety of actors.”

The Sandbox plays at VIFF on Oct. 13, followed by event screenings in Wolfville (Oct. 14), Quebec City (Oct. 15), Toronto (Oct. 16), and Montreal (Oct. 19), and Windsor Film Festival (Nov. 4).
