Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour Earns Rare Golden Globe Nomination for Docs

Concert film nominated in new category for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement

11 mins read

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour earned a rare Golden Globe nomination for a documentary this morning. The blockbuster concert doc scored a nomination in the Globes’ new category for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. The category recognizes feature films that grossed at least $150 million globally, $100 million of which must be from domestic ticket sales. The Eras Tour has earned nearly $250 million worldwide at the box office with a domestic haul of $178 million.

Swift’s concert doc proved a unique hit that shook up the system with the pop star releasing the film directly in the USA. (Cineplex Releasing handled the theatrical run in Canada.) Fans attended repeat showings and were encouraged by Swift to treat the film as a concert experience complete with selfies and dancing in the aisles. This success made the film eligible in an awards show in which documentaries generally aren’t eligible. Previous exceptions have been made in the case of animated works such as Flee and Waltz with Bashir, which won Best Foreign Language Film in 2009.

The Eras Tour joined the summer blockbuster duo of Barbie and Oppenheimer, aka Barbenheimer, which joined the concert doc in revitalizing the box office this year. Barbie and Oppenheimer led the overall Golden Globes nominations with nine and eight, respectively.

The full list of Golden Globe nominations is as follows. Winners will be announced on Sunday, January 7, 2024 on CBS and Paramount+. The Eras Tour streams on Prime Video beginning December 13.
