Batata, To Kill a Tiger, Dear Audrey and Handle with Care

2023 Canadian Screen Award Nominations for Documentary

Batata, Dear Audrey, Handle with Care, and To Kill a Tiger lead film nominees

20 mins read

It’s a four-way lead in the theatrical race of the Canadian Screen Award nominations. Batata, Dear Audrey, Handle with Care and To Kill a Tiger have three nominations each on the theatrical side of the Screenies including the top prize, the Ted Rogers Best Feature Length Documentary award. Rounding out that category in the nominations released this morning is zo reken with two nominations. The Canadian Screen Awards offer an additional doc prize this year with the inclusion of an award for music in a theatrical feature.

The five nominees for the Screenies’ Ted Rogers category generally reflect documentaries that represented Canadian film well on the festival circuit and in theatres. Notably absent from the top prize, though, is Geographies of Solitude, which managed a nomination for cinematography but isn’t up for best doc despite being a favourite on the festival circuit. The documentary field also has the biggest surprise of the day with Canada’s Oscar bid Eternal Spring shut out entirely. The Academy hasn’t given such a cold shoulder to an Oscar submission since Xavier Dolan’s I Killed My Mother, but even that managed a lone citation for Best First Feature.

On the broadcast side, Buffy Sainte-Marie: Carry It On, Sex with Sue, and We’re All Gonna Die Now (Even Jay Baruchel) lead the field with five nominations, followed by Unloved: Huronia’s Forgotten Children and Kids in the Hall: Comedy Punks with four. Many of the broadcast nominees are also festival favourites and, in some cases, had theatrical runs comparable to the film nominees. (Contenders choose a field when submitting.)

On the dramatic side, Clement Virgo’s Brother dominated the field with 14 nominations including Best Picture.

The documentary nominees for the Canadian Screen Awards are as follows:
