Sugarcane leads the nominations for this year’s Cinema Eye Honors. The doc directed by Emily Kassie and Julian Brave NoiseCat scored six citations including for Nonfiction Feature. Sugarcane offers a personal investigation into the tragedies at the residential school in the titular reserve in British Columbia.
On its heels with five nominations each are No Other Land, directed by the collective of Yuval Abraham, Basel Adra, Hamdan Ballal, and Rachel Szor, along with Dahomey, directed by Mati Diop. The former is a collaborative portrait between Palestinian and Israeli journalists to document Palestinians’ plight to protect their homeland, while the latter is an experimental study of repatriation and restitution. This year’s nominations marked a respectable showing for Canadian talents with Kassie joined by fellow Canadian nominees Natalie Rae (Daughters) and Brett Story (Union), while Oksana Karpovych’s Intercepted scored an editing nomination.
Nominations for the Cinema Eye Honors are determined by programmers and experts in the documentary field. Winners will be announced on January 9, 2025.
