Mr. Dressup: The Magic of Make-Believe leads the winners of the documentary, factual, lifestyle, and reality pack at the Canadian Screen Awards. The documentary about the beloved children’s TV icon scored five wins including Best Director for Rob McCallum. Mr. Dressup: The Magic of Make-Believe premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival where it scored the People’s Choice Award for documentary. It streams globally on Prime Video.

Other winners included Black Community Mixtapes, which scored three trophies including cinematography for the  CityTV series. Coming Home/Wanna Icipus Kupi, which streams on Crave/APTN, scored the Donald Brittain Award for Best Social/Political Documentary Program (arguably the unofficial top prize among the doc crowd) for its behind the scenes look at the creation of the dramatic series Little Bird. The series steamrolled the TV awards yesterday, netting multiple wins including Best Director, Drama Series for Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers, Best Ensemble Performance, and Best Supporting Performance, Drama for Braeden Clarke.

The show also offered the inaugural honour for sustainable production, which recognized Science North’s Jane Goodall: Reasons for Hope.

Additional documentary winners will be announced when the film awards are handed out later this week. Nominees include Someone Lives Here, Twice Colonized, and The Longest Goodbye.
