19 mins read

All that Breathes and Fire of Love lead the nominations for the 2022 International Documentary Association’s IDA Awards. Both films received five citations. All that Breathes, directed by Shaunak Sen, observes two brothers in a New Delhi bird clinic and the larger social forces echoed in their work. The film received four nominations, including Best Feature Documentary and Best Director. It also won the Pare Lorentz Award, which is announced prior to the ceremony.

Fire of Love, directed by Sara Dosa, scored five nominations for its all-archival portrait of volcanologists/filmmakers Maurice and Katia Krafft and the shared passions that fuelled them. The film earned five nominations, including Best Documentary Feature and Director, along with posthumous nominations in the Best Cinematography category for the Kraffts in recognition of their beautiful footage that fuels the film.

On the Canadian front, Toronto director Daniel Roher scored a nomination for Best Feature Documentary for Navalny. Nuisance Bear, directed by Jack Weisman and Gabriela Osio Vanden, popped up in the shorts category after winning the Critics Choice’ Award and is nominated in the race alongside Sarah Baril Gaudet’s The Benevolents. Jacquelyn Mills also scored a nomination for Best Cinematography for Geographies of Solitude and Jason Loftus earned a writing nomination for Canada’s Oscar bid Eternal Spring. Finally, film editor Jocelyne Chaput and producer Ina Fichman both received nominations for their work in Fire of Love.
