Flee leads this year’s nominations from the Cinema Eye Honors. The animated documentary directed by Jonas Poher Rasmussen scored eight mentions from Cinema Eye. The doc competes for honours including Outstanding Achievement in Non-Fiction Feature Filmmaking, Direction, and a mention in the non-competitive “Unforgettables” category for the doc’s chief subject, Amin. The film shares Amin’s story of fleeing his home in Afghanistan and internalising the feeling of flight while concealing his identity as a gay man. Flee is a triple-threat Oscar contender in the categories for documentary, animation, and Best International Feature where it is Denmark’s submission. Coming up next in the Cinema Eye Honors nominations is The Rescue with six mentions. The Thai cave rescue doc by E. Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin scored in numerous technical categories and Outstanding Achievement in Non-Fiction Feature Filmmaking. Surprisingly, the Oscar-winning duo missed in the directing category. Summer of Soul … (Or When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) also scored six nominations for Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson’s doc debut about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival. Soul also competes with Flee and The Rescue in the CinemaEye Honors’ Audience Award race, which has fifteen nominees.
Also vying for the top prize are Ascension, Faya Dayi, and The Velvet Underground. Each doc scored five nominations. Winners will be announced on January 13, 2022.
