For fans of homegrown heavy metal music, the name Voïvod might ring a few bells. The renowned Quebecois group is best known for its hardcore sound, influencing generations of Canadian metal enthusiasts with their homegrown origins. At this year’s Fantasia Film Festival, members of Voïvod will attend the world premiere of their documentary Voïvod: We Are Connected. The film covers the groundbreaking band’s expansive history as members from the group candidly discuss their influences and history with filmmaker Felipe Belalcazar.

The band from Jonquière first exploded out of the heavy metal scene in 1982. Inspired by the British metal new wave, contemporary hardcore/punk, and ’70s’ prog rock, vocalist Denis “Snake” Bélanger, guitarist Denis “Piggy” D’Amour, drummer Michel “Away” Langevin and bassist Jean-Yves “Blacky” Thériault first experimented as a speed metal band. The film covers their struggles, their ambitions, and their camaraderie. Belalcazar highlights the origins and eventual rise of the band we now know and love.

The Q&A at Fantasia will be hosted by actor and social media sensation Jason Rockman. Alongside the world premiere at Fantasia, the festival will host an exclusive exhibition commemorating the band’s legacy.
