Two more documentaries round out the programming slate for this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The festival announced 20 additional films for TIFF ’24 including the North American premiere of Dahomey. The new slate brings the total number of films at this year’s festival to a whopping 278 titles on the schedule.

Dahomey, directed by Mati Diop (Atlantics) won the Golden Bear at this year’s Berlinale. The film traces the repatriation of recovered objects that were stolen and displayed as part of colonial rule, and considers what countries can do with said pieces of history when they’ve forged national identities in their absence, and what artefacts shape people’s sense of self in their place. The doc will screen in the Special Presentations programme.

Dahomey was recently announced as one of five early selections for the Vancouver International Film Festival as well. The festival run will lead up to its theatrical release from MUBI beginning October 25.

Also announced for TIFF’s Special Presentations slate is the world premiere of Paul Anka: His Way. The film marks the latest portrait of the Canadian singer whose early period endures in the influential NFB documentary Lonely Boy. Paul Anka, directed by John Maggio, adds to a heavy slate of musical portraits at this year’s festival with headliners including The Tragically Hip, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Pharrell, and Andrea Bocelli.

Other titles completing the TIFF slate include the North American premieres of Luca Guadagnino’s Queer starring Daniel Craig, Pedro Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, and Francis Ford Coppola’s self-financed Megalopolis, which was one of the most talked about dramas at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

The festival also announced its public speaker series with the Visionaries and In Conversation with streams. The former will feature a conversation with Nobel Peace Prize winner and activist Malala Yousafzai, whose production company Extracurricular will debut the Apple/A24 joint venture Last of the Sea Women in the TIFF Docs programme. Also speaking in the Visionaries stream are Oscar winners Alfonso Cuarón and Pete Docter. The In Conversation with series, meanwhile, includes Academy Award winners Cate Blanchett and Steven Soderbergh.

TIFF runs September 5 to 15.
