Point of View (POV) Magazine, Canada’s premiere magazine covering the world of documentary culture, is hiring a summer contract position in the role of editorial assistant through Canada Summer Jobs. This role is an ideal opportunity for a student or early career candidate with an interest in documentary film and/or journalism to gain experience in a media environment.

The editorial assistant will work with POV Magazine to develop the skills for taking a story from pitch to completion. This role will predominantly focus on work with the online magazine.

The scope of this assignment includes writing film reviews, screening films for review, conducting filmmaker interviews, transcribing and/or editing interviews, posting news stories, assembling lists, and creating short ‘where to watch’ articles for documentaries available on streaming.

Duties include drafting articles for the website, putting articles into WordPress, conducting and transcribing interviews, and assisting with layout proofing for the print issue. Other duties include formatting articles for the online magazine, such as sourcing, resizing, and uploading photos and maximizing articles for SEO purposes.

Participants will be encouraged to develop a few long-lead stories that they can work on throughout the contract, and will work with the publisher to develop an editorial calendar.

This role gives participants a hands-on opportunity to learn the editorial process through all stages while developing content and clippings for their portfolios.
