Hot Docs is back for another serving of Doc Soup. The popular screening series returns for its 2022 series with the Toronto premiere of The Perfect Story on October 5. The doc directed by journalist/filmmaker Michelle Shephard (Guantanamo’s Child) marks a comeback for the in-person subscription series, which features notable filmmakers and special guests in attendance for premiere screenings and extended conversations.

The Perfect Story is a personal work from Shephard as she explores the boundaries of journalism and filmmaking, and objectivity and ethics. It follows the relationship Shepard and Somali refugee Ismael Abdulle. The Perfect Story charts a journey between the two that began with a 2010 article that Shephard wrote for the Toronto Star that eventually helped Abdulle find refuge in Norway and escape the terrorist group al-Shabab after losing both a hand and foot to violence. Shephard will attend the screening of The Perfect Story along with additional journalists and experts in conversation. The Perfect Story is a co-production between Frequent Flyer Films and the NFB.

All screenings are at Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema with subscriptions now on sale. Doc Soup subscriptions include admission to each of the seven in-cinema monthly screenings, exclusive access to stream the films on Hot Docs at Home for a limited time window, and 12 tickets for the 2023 Hot Docs Festival. Hot Docs will announce additional Doc Soup screenings throughout the season.
