Welcome to Chechnya Regains Lead in Hot Docs Audience Award Race

Welcome to Chechnya

By Pat Mullen

Hot Docs audiences are showing their support for Pride Month as Welcome to Chechnya returns to number one in the rankings for the festival’s Audience Award. David France’s film chronicles the oppressive anti-LGBT regime in Chechnya and the courageous activists fighting for their rights. The film has been enjoying a back-and-forth in the rankings with abortion rights doc The 8th, which fell to fourth place after holding the top spot for a few days.

A number of Canadian titles are on the list and in the hunt for both the Rogers Audience Award and the overall audience award for the festival favourite. The top five Canadian features will split the $50,000 prize this year. Today is the final day for viewers to vote in the Audience Award race with the winners being announced tomorrow.
