Two music documentaries are among the 68 titles in the first wave of selections for this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Jonathan Demme’s Justin Timberlake doc JT + The Tennessee Kids and Paul Dugdale’s The Rolling Stones Olé Olé Olé! : A Trip Across Latin America are both among the glitzy high profile selections in today’s announcement. Both films will screen as part of the Gala series at Roy Thompson Hall and both films are world premieres. These titles mark a leap forward from last year’s Gala line-up, which had zero docs, although the Festival had the major unveiling of Michael Moore’s Where to Invade Next on opening night as a Special Presentation.

Rolling Stone Keith Richards was previously at TIFF for Under the Influence but the potential presence of all the Stones, plus Justin Timberlake, could mean that documentaries will make a big splash at the Festival this year. TIFF’s Opening Night selection is Antoine Fuqua’s remake of The Magnificent Seven starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt, while the Closing Night film is the teen dramedy The Edge of Seventeen directed by Kelly Fremon Craig and starring True Grit’s Hailee Steinfeld.

No docs appear yet in the Special Presentations line-up, although mockumentary master Christopher Guest returns with Mascots, a farce on the world of fluffy sports mascots. More docs will be announced in the coming weeks starting with the Canadian titles on August 3 and the TIFF Docs slate shortly thereafter. Doc master Werner Herzog also joins the line-up, but with the new drama Salt and Fire.
