Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 11/9 to open TIFF Docs

Thom Powers is swinging big this year. TIFF Docs promises an auteur-heavy field! The festival announced the international docs for TIFF 2018 today. Opening the TIFF Docs programme is the world premiere of Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 11/9, the much-anticipated Trump takedown that follows up his mega-hit Fahrenheit 9/11. The closing night doc is the North American premiere of Margarethe von Trotta’s Searching for Ingmar Bergman.

Other big names on the menu include Werner Herzog, Errol Morris, Mark Cousins, Rithy Panh, and Fred Wiseman, whose Monrovia, Indiana is an astonishingly short entry in his oeuvre, clocking in at only 143 minutes. There is also a new documentary from Janus Metz, who opened last year’s festival with the engaging tennis drama Borg/McEnroe. Other big names include Rashida Jones’s Quincy about her famous father, composer Quincy Jones, and Billy Corben’s Screwball, which takes a humorous look at a doping scandal in Major League Baseball. Notable omissions from the line-up are Morgen Neville’s Orson Welles doc They’ll Love Me When I’m Dead and this year’s acclaimed L’OEil d’or winner Samouni Road, a hit a Cannes for its animated take on the migration crisis.

Today’s announcement added 27 films to the TIFF Docs line-up, which already included the Canadian selections Carmine Street Guitars, Prosecuting Evil, and What is Democracy?. The Canuck contingent also includes Rob Stewart’s Sharkwater: Extinction as a special event and the Baichwal/Burtynsky/de Pencier opus Anthropocene in Special Presentations.
