The 8th holds its lead on the penultimate day for voting in the Hot Docs Audience Awards race. The compelling portrait of the fight for abortion rights in Ireland maintained the number one spot for the second day in a row with previous audience favourite Welcome to Chechnya hot on its heels in second place. The early frontrunner, Green Blood, fell out of the top ten after enjoying lead for the first days of the rankings. Voting for the Hot Docs Audience Award closes at the end of the day on Saturday, June 6, since that represents the final day of the screening window for some films participating in the online festival.

Hot Docs revived its tradition of masking the Canadian titles late in the race in order to preserve an element of surprise for the Rogers Audience Award. Canadian features in the rankings appear with the label “Contender for Rogers Audience Award.” Yesterday’s update saw The Forbidden Reel claim the top spot with previous favourites like The Walrus and the Whistleblower, First We Eat, There’s No Place Like This Place, Anyplace, and 9/11 Kids on its heels. The Canadian front saw one new addition to the top 20 with the appearance of NFB short Gun Killers. (Shorts usually get their own top five once the votes are final.) This year’s Rogers Audience Award will share the wealth of the annual $50,000 prize among the top five Canadian features. All viewers at Hot Docs’ online festival receive one vote per streaming purchase.
