Sign this Petition to Save Bravo!Fact
By Pat Mullen
There’s bad news for emerging Canadian artists with this week’s decision by CRTC chairman Jean-Pierre Blais (aka ‘resident scold’ of Policy Matters) to kill support for two platforms for emerging musicians and filmmakers: Bravo!FACT and MuchFACT. Bravo!FACT (Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent) is a juried competition that awards $50,000 in production support to emerging filmmakers to make a short film. (The subcategory Bravo!FACTUAL covers documentary.) MuchFACT assists in the production of music videos. These channels and funds give the filmmakers of tomorrow both a resource and a platform to develop their work. They’re seeds for the industry.
In a call to Heritage Minister Mélanie Joly and Bell Media, the Directors Guild of Canada asks Canadians and the arts community to lend their support in requesting a reversal to this change. Their petition at Change.org makes a case of the vitality of these programs:
“The money put into developing them now, creates the next huge TV hit or ratings sensation later. It also grows our industry, economy and cultural diversity. Doing the right thing can be the right corporate thing as well. Be the cultural leader that you’ve been and let the new crop of filmmakers and storytellers have a chance and a mandate.”
We’ve called upon Mme. Joly before to show her support for Canadian culture. Sign the petition to send the call again.
