RIDM Announces Complete Line-up!
By Pat Mullen
The complete line-up for Recontres Internationales du Documentaire de Montrèa / the Montreal International Documentary Festival is out! This announcement adds to the previous slate of docs named earlier this year that includes Gulîstan, Land of Roses, Cannes Golden Eye winner Cinema Novo, and opening night selection Fire at Sea.
This year’s Canadian Feature Competition is notably strong and diverse. The ten films include a number of festival favourites and award winners, including Hot Docs champs The Prison in Twelve Landscapes, Living with Giants and Angry Inuk. The Canuck contingent also features a fair balance of men and women, and stories from various pockets of the land. Perhaps the most interesting stat? The running time that separates Sylvain L’Espérance’s Combat au bout de la nuit from the rest of the competition is a whopping three hours and 15 minutes. Clocking it at 285 minutes, this doc is Fred Wiseman-level epic.
Other notable docs outside the feature competition include John Bolton’s Aim for the Roses and Penny Lane’s Nuts! (read about both films in the current feature ‘Performing Documentary’, available on stands now in POV #103.), while the Special Presentations programme continues the strong festival runs for Alanis Obomsawin’s We Can’t Make the Same Mistake Twice, Austerlitz, and Mr. Gaga.
