One Canadian film is a step closer to an Oscar nomination! Charlie Tyrell’s My Dead Dad’s Porno Tapes advanced in the Oscar race for documentary short subject with today’s wave of shortlist announcements. Tyrell’s film has been a hit on the festival circuit and recently made Canada’s Top Ten. Watch the film here.

The Oscar shortlists, which were announced in nine categories today including documentary feature and documentary short subject, narrowed the fields to fifteen films and ten films in the non-fiction categories. The feature shortlist, winnowed from 166 contenders, contained all of the expected frontrunners including Morgan Neville’s Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, Betsy Cohen and Julie West’s RBG, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin’s Free Solo, and Tim Wardle’s Three Identical Strangers, all of which made the cut after hugely successful box office runs. None of the documentaries submitted for Best Foreign Language Film made the shortlist in that category or the documentary feature list.

Popular docs that missed the cut, but weren’t being tapped for the shortlist, included Quincy and Fahrenheit 11/9. Quincy was one of two documentaries to land on the shortlist for original song, scoring a citation for Keep Reachin’ by Quincy Jones, Mark Ronson, and Chaka Khan. The song competes with RBG’s anthem I’ll Fight written by Diane Warren and performed by Jennifer Hudson. Other shortlists narrowed the fields in categories for musical score, animated short film, live action short film, visual effects, and make-up and hairstyling.
