Jennifer Baichwal and Nick de Pencier’s Tragically Hip doc Long Time Running is the doc of the day. The film is the only documentary to set to receive the red carpet treatment so far at the Toronto International Film Festival. TIFF’s first wave of Galas and Special Presentations were unveiled today for the 2017 festival with Long Time Running on the ticket for a Gala spotlight at Roy Thomson Hall.

Long Time Running follows The Tragically Hip as the band readies for its farewell concert following the announcement that frontman Gord Downie has terminal brain cancer. The spotlight screening of Canada’s favourite band is bound to be one of the most emotional events of the festival and among the biggest Canadian and documentary slots at TIFF ’17.

Baichwal and de Pencier are TIFF regulars with the former’s Watermark and Manufactured Landscapes screening at the festival in 2013 and 2006, respectively, with Landscapes winning the prize for Best Canadian Feature. de Pencier was at TIFF last year with the world premiere of Black Code.

TIFF is set to unveil its slate of documentaries with the TIFF Docs announcement on August 1st and the Canadian programming announcement on August 9th.

This year’s festival runs Sept. 7-17. Please visit tiff.net for more information.
