Jennifer Baichwal Joins TIFF Board of Directors
By Pat Mullen
Documentary master Jennifer Baichwal joins the board of directors at the Toronto International Film Festival. The news comes today in an announcement from TIFF that the doc-maker (and DOC member and POV subscriber) is one of five new faces on the board. The other new board members are Geoff Beattie, Frank Kollmar, Leslie Noble, and Jeffrey Remedios.
Baichwal is often a prominent fixture at the Festival with films such as Watermark and Manufactured Landscapes screening there to great acclaim. Manufactured Landscapes won the Festival’s prize for Best Canadian Feature in 2006. Both Manufactured Landscapes and Watermark won the Genie/Canadian Screen Award for Best Documentary Feature and the Toronto Film Critics Association prize for Best Canadian Film.
Baichwal’s other recent films include the adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s Payback, and Act of God. She is currently shooting Anthropocene, which is the third instalment of a trilogy made in collaboration with photographer Edward Burtynsky that began with Manufactured Landscapes and Watermark. Baichwal has also contributed to POV as both a subject and a writer, including a great article ‘Politics and Sleeves’ in which she gave her pointed view in defense of the aesthetics of suffering in Maufactured Landscapes.
