We’ve had some requests from members of the doc community to post the kind words that POV board member Michael McNamara had to say about POV editor Marc Glassman upon presenting him with the Rogers-DOC Luminary Award last month. McNamara kindly sent us a copy of his speech, which you may read below:

The Rogers-DOC Luminary Award is presented to a person who not only excels in their position, but is also actively involved in supporting Canada’s robust documentary community. A person who embodies the creative spirit of the Canadian documentary tradition and generously supports the next generation of doc-makers. Who works behind the scenes to ensure that the genre remains strong for generations to come.

We’re so thankful to have the Rogers Group of Funds sponsoring this award. The Funds have supported more than 640 doc projects since 1996 with close to $27 million dollars! That’s an incredible achievement and impact on our industry!

Rogers Group of Funds’ executive director and a true friend of DOC, Robin Mirsky, was going to present the Rogers-DOC Luminary Award, but unfortunately she came down with the flu and was unable to attend. Feel better Robin! I’m filling in and I couldn’t be more proud to do so.

To quote Mark Achbar, this year’s honoree is a “human documentary dating service – always matchmaking, introducing newbies to veterans, building bridges and working to expand an ever-growing network of Canadian and international colleagues, one filmmaker at a time”.

For more than 30 years, our community has been the recipient of Marc Glassman’s tireless devotion to the documentary form. Literally tireless:
For starter’s Marc has been a senior programmer for:
-Hot Docs Film Festival,
-Reel Canada,
-What’s Up Doc,
-Planet In Focus,
-And The Grierson Documentary Festival…

He’s been a film critic, interviewer and documentary teacher spreading love of the form to new converts.
And, for more than 15 years, Marc has been at the helm of THE premiere periodical of documentary culture – POV Magazine – bringing the stories of our documentary filmmakers to the world.
Few Canadians are as dedicated to documentaries, or as effective at building the documentary community, as Marc Glassman. Recognizing his devotion and dedication is long overdue.
So it gives me great pleasure to recognize and celebrate him now – the 2015 recipient of the Rogers-DOC Luminary Award – Marc Glassman.
