Do a little doc-ing this long weekend with Canadian films Life Off Grid, The Messenger, and Speed Sisters playing on Canuck screens over Easter, while Saskatoon audiences can enjoy a retro screening of the Canadian classic Forbidden Love during the week and doc fans in the National Capital can catch Peace Park at The Mayfair. The hot ticket for Toronto audiences in the upcoming week, however, is the excellent Human Rights Watch Film Festival that kicks off at TIFF Bell Lightbox on March 30. HRWFF opens with the powerful film I am Sun Mu, which illustrates the necessity of artistic expression as the doc chronicles political artist Sun Mu and his battles with the North Korean government. Thursday offers an encore screening of TIFF 2015 selection The Pearl Button in which audiences can encounter a visually wondrous exploration of the elements at director Patricio Guzmán navigates the intricate relationship between water and colonialism in Chile. Check back soon for POV reviews of both films (and additional titles screening later in the fest). Looking at this week’s docs though, POV promises that the Easter Bunny won’t be bringing any rotten eggs!
