Docs Screening in Canada this Week (July 15-21)

The Missing Ingredient

By Pat Mullen

Dinner and a movie should be on the menu this week when the Canadian film The Missing Ingredient opens at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema and asks doc fans to consider the recipe for success. This likable and down-to-earth doc gives audiences something to chew on, especially if they tuck in with friends at their favourite eatery following the film.

Reminiscing about movies over dinner or drinks is a perfect course to complement How to Build a Time Machine, which is this week’s other notable Canadian release. The film celebrates the power of moving images as two die-hard fans of the sci-fi classic The Time Machine strive to build time travel devices (of different kinds) in real life. Topic of conversation: to which era would you and your moviegoing companion return?

Fans of movies about movies will enjoy this week’s expansion of De Palma to other markets, while doc fans looking for more Canadian films can catch one-off screenings of Canadian Screen Award nominee Last of the Elephant Men, Canada’s Top Ten selection Ninth Floor at Cinema Politica, and a host of docs at the Gimli Film Festival.
