Docs Screening in Canada This Week (Dec. 4 - 10)

Al Purdy Was Here
Courtesy of Films We Like

By Pat Mullen

This week offers an embarrassment of riches for doc fans! New releases include the theatrical premiere of Brian D. Johnson’s wonderful Al Purdy Was Here, which is arguably the best Canadian doc of the year. =Literary types and Canadian film fans are in for a treat as a chorus of Canada’s literary greats recall the icon of Canadian poetry while Canuck singers like Bruce Cockburn, Sarah Harmer, and Tanya Tagaq pay tribute to Purdy’s poetry through song. This slice of Canadiana—and a runner-up for TIFF’s People’s Choice Award for Documentary—is not to be missed. (Nor is a stroll by the Al Purdy statue en route to the Bloor!) Likewise, Hitchcock/Truffaut is a cinéaste’s feast as a who’s who of directors gab about the art of Alfred Hitchcock. Add to this list some encore screenings and continued runs, plus festival screenings of some eclectic docs (Lost Conquest at Ottawa’s Mirror Mountain Film Festival looks like Christopher Guest come to life), so doc fans had better clear their schedules for a busy week!
