Docs Screening in Canada this Week (Apr. 1-7)

The Uncondemned

Forget April Showers, this month begins with a furious hurricane of documentaries. Activism is in this April and the screenings at TIFF’s Human Rights Watch Film Festival and Cinema Politica are evidence of this trend. Sylvia Hamilton’s landmark The Little Black Schoolhouse is POV’s top pick of the Cinema Politica network screenings, while HRWFF features two must-see screenings this week (although all the films are worth catching) with the work-in-progress preview of The Uncondemned and the Closing Night selection of Almost Holy from Blood Brother director Steve Hoover. The former film feels especially timely and powerful in the aftermath of the Jian Ghomeshi trial as The Uncondemned examines a landmark human rights case in which rape assumes the status of a war crime and form of genocide. The festival invites audiences to engage in a post-screening Q&A, which is bound to be emotionally-charged and thought-provoking, as should the convos following all good docs should be. Almost Holy also features a post-screening filmmaker Q&A and is bound to generate just as much discussion. (Check back soon for reviews of both films!)

On the Canadian front, Al Purdy continues its run as Film Circuit MVP, while The Messenger migrates around the country and Hadwin’s Judgement brings its message to Winnipeg, while the Canuck co-pro City of Gold hits the Bloor. Fight the good fight at the movies this week! (Preferably with extra butter.)
