Docs Opening in Canada this Week (Sept. 29 - Oct. 5)

Long Time Running
Elevation Pictures

By Pat Mullen

Movie theatres across Canada get a little hipper this week. The excellent Tragically Hip doc Long Time Running expands its run nationwide after lighting up festivals and special event screenings earlier this month. There won’t be a dry eye in cinemas from coast to coast as this doc by Jennifer Baichwal and Nicholas de Pencier takes audiences behind the scenes of the Hip’s final tour. “All music lovers in Canada owe it to themselves to see Long Time Running,” we wrote in our review from TIFF. “This patriotic music doc gives Canada’s band its due and the Tragically Hip’s final tour offers a stirring snapshot of collective Canadian pride.” Read the POV review of Long Time Running here.’

Park your ass at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema for the acclaimed “donkumentary” Do Donkeys Act?. Willem Dafoe narrates this film that visits donkey sanctuaries around the world (including Canada) and invites audiences to reconsider these creatures as intelligent beings. “Examining and breaking down the stereotypes we have surrounding the donkey, from stubborn to foolish, “ we wrote in our review of Do Donkeys Act? from Hot Docs, “we are invited to re-examine the animals through a gaze not tainted by human bias.” Read the POV review of Do Donkeys Act? here.

This week also features the return of Doc Soup at Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema with Bending the Arc (check back soon for a review!), while Vancouver doc fans can catch plenty of non-fiction flicks at the Vancouver International Film Festival. Visit the POV VIFF Hub for more coverage from this year’s festival!
