Docs Opening in Canada this Week (Oct. 21)

Driving with Selvi

By Pat Mullen

This week brings a number of top titles from the festival circuit to theatres. Can Con, an Oscar contender, and a breathtaking portrait of the Canadian wilderness are all on tap across the country, while one music doc that was surprisingly absent from the festival circuit kicks off its run.

The list of openers starts with Driving with Selvi, which makes some pit stops at theatres around the country after being a crowd-pleaser on its cross-Canada festival run. This doc from Elisa Paloschi offers an inspiring portrait of a young woman named Selvi, who tells her story of escaping violence and finding herself firmly behind the wheel both literally and figuratively. As South India’s first female cab driver, Selvi breaks through the nation’s rough patriarchal society and prove’s a woman’s self-worth. Driving with Selvi is supported by DOC’s Giving Voice programme and the DOC Institute Breakthrough Program, which assist emerging filmmakers. Paloschi and Selvi will be on hand for Q&As following screenings at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema.

This year’s Golden Bear winner at Berlin, Fire at Sea comes to theatres after being a top doc on the circuit. This powerful and visually stunning doc from Italian master Gianfranco Rosi is an eye-opening study of migration as Rosi observes the waters and shores of the Italian island of Lampedusa where countless migrants from Africa use as a landing dock to a better life if they survive the journey. The doc is Italy’s submission for Best Foreign Language Film POV hopes it goes all the way. Read the POV review of Fire at Sea here.

Oscar loves a good music doc and last year’s winner Asif Kapadia (Amy) could find himself in the running again this year as an Executive Producer of the Oasis doc Supersonic. Like Amy, Supersonic is an absorbing and meticulously crafted archival film about the highs and costs of fame as director Mat Whitecross stitches together the story of the great Manchester band and the ugly sibling rivalry between brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher. The doc kicks off this Thursday. (Read the POV review here!)

More one-off screenings abound as Festember keeps on trucking. This week’s festival slate includes docs like Lowdown Tracks and The Incomparable Rose Hartman at the Grand River Film Festival, We Can’t Make the Same Mistake Twice at imagineNATIVE, and a bunch of worthy eco docs at Planet in Focus.
