Meet Beau Dick: Maker of Monsters

By Pat Mullen

Meet Beau Dick. The late Vancouver artist’s work can be seen on our latest cover and in the new documentary Meet Beau Dick: Maker of Monsters. The Kwakwaka’wakw carver and mask maker was also a committed activist for Indigenous issues, and this feature-length profile by LaTiesha Ti’si’tla Fazakas and Natalie Boll explores Dick’s life and work by following him in his final years, watching him hone his craft and joining him for a rousing protest in the Idle No More movement. Speaking to POV earlier this year, Fazakas recalled discovering the artist by picking up one of his incredible masks. “The mask was delightfully terrifying in a way that wasn’t grotesque but sublime,” she said. “It was like he reached out to me through his work and piqued my interest in a way that gave me a thirst for more knowledge.” Learn more about Dick and Maker of Monsters in our cover story The Lives of Artists.

Also opening on the Canadian front is Scott Harper’s You’re Soaking in It. This doc dives into the world of digital advertising where Mad Men are replaced by “Math Men” and bizarre algorithms that invade privacy and tailor content to clients’ needs. Talking heads, snazzy graphics, and some surprisingly media literature kids lay out all there is to know about advertising awareness in the digital age. Back at Hot Docs, we wrote: _“You’re Soaking in It encourages audiences and consumers to see the invisible advertising that has become covertly pervasive in the digital age. Algorithms, add-ons, and even monitors for physical reactions like eye movement and emotions, have replaced Don Draper today.” Read the POV review of You’re Soaking in It here.

Speaking of innovation, did you know that late Hollywood starlet Hedy Lamarr helped pioneer Wi-Fi? True story. In addition to being an icon of the silver screen, a headline hotcake who gave cinema its first orgasm, the wife of a Nazi collaborator, and the mistress of JFK, Lamarr somehow found time to co-invent a radio-control technology meant for torpedoes during World War II. Bombshell: The Hedy Hamarr Story goes beyond the glitz and glamour of Hollywood life to show audiences a side of a woman they thought they knew. Just who was Lamarr playing all along?
