Docs Opening in Canada this Week (Nov. 17-23)

Bill Nye: Science Guy

By Pat Mullen

Forget Justice League, Bill Nye is the true superhero at the movies this weekend! Smarter than Batman and speedier than the Flash, the world’s favourite science teacher gets the doc treatment. Bill Nye: Science Guy drops the “the” from the TV personality’s name (it’s cleaner) and offers a warts-and-all treatment of the man who amazed kids with cool experiments and book smarts before iPhones drained their attention spans. Back at Hot Docs, we wrote, “the doc goes deeper than Nye’s craving for the spotlight and his winning shtick. This is a bio-doc that traces Nye’s history and reveals his vulnerabilities.” Read the full review of Bill Nye: Science Guy here!

No other docs open this week with the superheroes hogging all the screens, but there are ample expansions, one-offs, and festivals including the Regent Park Film Festival, which hosts Whose Streets?, Unarmed Verses and My Piece of the City based on Moze Mossanen’s web series The Journey.

Don’t forget that there’s also a free screening of A Whale of a Tale at Reel Asian, co-presented by POV, next Saturday. Get tickets here.
