The Gospel According to Andre
Pacific Northwest Pictures

By Pat Mullen

Get a fabulous look at a fashion icon with The Gospel According to André. This fun film by Kate Novack profiles the flamboyantly larger than life character of fashion critic/commentator André Leon Talley. “Kate Novack offers a long needed and detailed examination of André Leon Talley’s life and career,” wrote Anastasia Akulinina while reviewing the film at TIFF. “The film features plentiful celebrities, including Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, Anna Wintour, Bethann Hardison, Valentino, and Manolo Blahnik, all of whom are big fans of Talley’s work. Their accounts combined with masterfully curated and researched archival footage expose Talley’ lifelong achievements.” Read the POV review of The Gospel According to André here.

Nature looks much better on the big screen, doesn’t it? Especially if the sun is shining and the air conditioning is cutting the heat? Doc fans with green thumbs with want to take in the “Docs in Bloom” series at Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema, which offers a bouquet of films profiling the gardeners of the world. The series includes the new release Five Seasons: The Gardens of Piet Oudolf, which highlights the efforts of garden designer Piet Oudolf. It’s not the most exciting film, but the scenery is certainly nice. Flower-loving film buffs might want to check out The Gardener in the series as well. Read the POV review of Five Seasons here.

This week also sees a strong expansion for superhero doc RBG, while Wim Wenders’ timid-but admirable Pope Francis: A Man of His Word holds steady, and LGBTQ docs stand strong at Inside Out with films like Hurley and Call Her Ganda screening at the fest. Steer clear of Cinesphere tonight, though, when Terrence Malick’s Voyage of Time gives Doors Open Toronto attendees the IMAX experience. It is undoubtedly one of the worst documentaries this site has ever reviewed. Sometimes watching nature isn’t all that exciting!
