Hot Docs might be over, but there are enough docs screening this weekend to satisfy any film buff with the post-festival blues. Doc fans can kick off the weekend with Hot Docs’ opening night film The Heat: A Kitchen ®evolution from Hogtown homegirl Maya Gallus. The director returns to the world of restaurants after 2010’s Dish and asks why so few women enjoy lead roles in restaurants when the domestic space is traditionally dominated by their gender. The Heat offers a warm plate of comfort food as Gallus goes into various kitchens and interviews the women whipping up change. The doc leaves ample food for thought as the festival serves a buffet of female-driven stories. Bon appétit! Read more about The Heat in our interview with Maya Gallus!

Any fans of Rivers and Tides? Director Thomas Riedelsheimer follows up on the career of land-based sculptor Andy Goldsworthy with this serene portrait of the artist as he connects with nature and inspires audiences with his green thumbs. “Leaning into the Wind is an evocative film about an artist, who truly identifies with farmers and workers,” writes Marc Glassman in our review for the film. “Andy Goldsworthy’s love of nature is ever present.Read the POV review of Leaning Into the Wind here.

Another portrait of an artist comes in Heather Lenz’s Kusama – Infinity about pop artist Yayoi Kusama and her funky polka dots. Audiences who couldn’t score tickets to the hugely popular Kusama exhibit can experience her wild and wonderful art at this documentary opening at TIFF Lightbox. (Which, being a ghost town, lets art lovers skip the notorious line-ups at the AGO.) The film looks at Kusama’s life and work, including her residence in a mental institution where art offers a therapeutic escape. “Heather Lenz has made a loving respectful film about a subject well worth documenting,” writes Marc Glassman in our review of the film. “If you love art, this is a must-see. Kusama – Infinity is also the closing night feature at Vancouver’s DOXA Documentary Festival this weekend. Other docs at the fest include an encore presentation of The Rankin File: Legacy of a Radical, Anote’s Ark, and God Straightens Legs.
