Docs Opening in Canada this Week (Mar. 8 - 14)

Invisible Essence: The Little Prince

By Pat Mullen

Experience a childhood classic anew as director Charles Officer cracks open the spine of The Little Prince. Officer’s new doc Invisible Essence: The Little Prince revisits the beloved book by Antoine de Saint-ExupĂ©ry by drawing upon the work’s ongoing relevance and significance, particularly within the framework of its popular line, “What is essential is invisible to the eye.” The film features the story of a young boy, Sahil, who encounters the book for the first time, while enthusiastic adults from around the world speak to the themes and magic that sparked their imaginations as children and inspired them throughout their lives. Read the more about Invisible Essence: The Little Prince in our interview with Charles Officer.

Less inspiring, but surely made with the best of intentions, is the feel good doc Finding Hygge. The doc explores the Danish concept of hygge, pronounced hoo-gah, which the Danes use to conceptualize happiness. A lot of warmly lit interviews offer feel good buzzwords and chicken soup for the soul, but there’s a vapid shallowness to the film. It’s performative homeopathy in the way of Gwyneth Paltrow lifestyle blogging. If Goop: The Movie is good for you, so be it, but not everyone may be down for a coffee enema.
