Docs Opening in Canada this Week (June 8-14)

Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

By Pat Mullen

It’s a beautiful day in the neighbourhood! Oscar winner Morgan Neville (20 Feet from Stardom) makes America kind again with a return to the wonderful world of Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood in Won’t You Be My Neighbor? The Hot Docs hit comes to theatres beginning Friday and it offers a message of warmth and empathy that audiences desperately need in today’s political climate. “Neville doesn’t beat the political context on the head and he doesn’t have to,” we wrote in our review of the film. “A little kindness goes a long way.” Don’t sleep on this one – Won’t You Be My Neighbor? is the best film of the year so far. Hot off its acclaimed premiere at Hot Docs last month comes the runner-up for this year’s Audience Award, The Accountant of Auschwitz. This powerful film from director Matthew Shoychet examines the trial of Oskar Gröning, a death camp employee standing for the crimes of the Holocaust. Even if Gröning did not personally kill any of the people marched into Auschwitz, is he guilty of countless murders? “The Accountant of Auschwitz carries weight not only because it helps to keep memory alive in a world where genocide has not been eliminated,” wrote Maurie Alioff while reviewing the film at Hot Docs. “This thoughtful, eloquently assembled film raises the issue of forgiveness without advocating for or against it.” Read the POV review of The Accountant of Auschwitz here.

It’s no secret that the world is changing. Temperatures and waters rise as glaciers melt and storms brew. Directors Nova Ami and Velcrow Ripper offer a poem for the planet in Metamorphosis, a new NFB release that offers a visually striking look at a world in transition. The film charts the globe visiting locales such as Milan, Phoenix, and LA, drinking up visual evidence for climate change and taking in the perspectives of those who fight for change. In his review of the film, POV editor Marc Glassman called Metamorphosis a “a beautiful meditative piece on the environment.” Read the POV review of Metamorphosis here.
