Docs Opening in Canada this Week (June 29 - July 5)

Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist

By Pat Mullen

Bust out your pirate garb and punk rocker white tees! The new Vivienne Westwood doc Westwood: Punk, Activist, Icon opens this week in Toronto and Vancouver and gives the iconoclastic British fashion designer an unconventional portrait. Reports from this year’s Sundance Fest Festival indicated that Westwood wasn’t happy with her portrayal in the doc, but is it as “mediocre” as she tweeted? Not at all, although one can appreciate why she’s peeved about the movie. Westwood works because it goes against the grain for celebrity profile pics and often shows the designer in a difficult and unflattering light while outlining her hard fought and well-earned road to success. “Taylor eschews celebrity profile hagiography to provide a fuller and fairer portrait of Westwood,” we wrote while reviewing the film. “That’s exactly why the film works: Westwood isn’t just another bullshit puff piece.” Read the POV review of Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist here.

Doc fans can catch the Canadian premiere of Rock Rubber 45s Friday for a single-event screening at Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema. The film is director Bobbito García’s autobiographical study of the connections forged through basketball as he explores the social dynamics of the game and explores the communities that come together by shooting hoops. “The presence of famous friends and admirers — not just [Lin-Manuel] Miranda, but Rosie Perez, Michael Rapaport, Questlove and Chuck D — makes it clear that Garcia isn’t overstating the fun to be had at the nightclub dance parties and Stevie Wonder tributes he went on to host or co-host,” wrote John DeFore while reviewing the film at The Hollywood Reporter “And Garcia’s own happy energy makes him good company even for a not-quite-convinced viewer. But especially in the last 20 minutes, Rock Rubber 45s feels like a video assembled for somebody’s lifetime-achievement-award ceremony.”

This week also sees the expansion of hybrid drama American Animals, while RBG and Won’t You Be My Neighbor? continue their impressive run as the hottest docs of the summer.
