Docs Opening in Canada this Week (June 22-28)

Design Canada

By Pat Mullen

Get the scoop behind Canada’s national brand leading up to July 1. Design Canada explores the history and significance of some of the nation’s most iconic logos. Images from the Canadian flag to the logos for the CBC, RBC, and CN Railway all combine to an idea of Canadianness that evolves over time. “The long road to Canada’s brand is a tricky one,” we wrote in our review of the doc. “Design Canada illuminates the many pieces that comprise the puzzle of Canadian identity.” Read the POV review of Design Canada here.

Readers who do their weekly duty and report Donald Trump’s toxic tweets every few days might want to check out The Cleaners. This eye-opening doc looks at the secret world of Internet “cleaners” who quickly peruse community standards and determine with a few seconds and a click which images are acceptable and which are not. “We are living in perilous times, when freedom of speech can lead to hatred and no one knows what’s real anymore,” wrote Marc Glassman while reviewing the film. “The Cleaners is a film made for the times we’re living in right now.” Read the POV review of The Cleaners here.

Finally, while technically not a doc, Bart Layton’s ingenious hybrid drama American Animals is bound to wow documentary fans with its blend of fiction and non-fiction. The film takes a bizarre true story in which four Kentucky college students concocted a plan to rob the rare books collection at their school library. But drawing only upon heist flicks like Ocean’s 11 and Snatch, the gang’s plan goes horribly wrong as the real-life subjects reflect upon their crimes in sobering interviews cut against a slick dramatization of their story. “The dramatic narrative draws upon interviews Layton performed with the characters’ real life counterparts and American Animals relishes in the gaps between details,” we wrote in our review of the film. “By blending the fleeting thrills and real world consequences of this wild heist, American Animals is true crime at its finest.” Read the POV review of American Animals here.
