Docs Opening in Canada this Week (June 15-21)

Becoming Who I Was

By Pat Mullen

It’s a quiet week on the documentary front as the kids of The Incedibles make noise all around town. Doc fans looking for a little serenity (and, perhaps, a little wisdom) might find it in the poignant Becoming Who I Was. This quiet and contemplative doc tells the story of Padma, a young boy in Tibet whom the Buddhist monks believe to be a “Rinpoche,” which designates him as the reincarnation of a wise teacher who roamed the Earth in another lifetime. The doc sees Padma undertake a spiritual pilgrimage with his tutor as they seek to return the wise old mind in the young boy’s body back to its homeland. “The film has a stirring and awe-inspiring air of serenity that befits its subject. Striking drone shots use the powerful magnitude of the natural landscape, particularly in the final touching moments in the snowy mountains, to let viewers look over the boy like an all-seeing eye from the heavens,” we wrote in our review of the film. “Becoming Who I Was is a film of quietly moving grace.” Read the POV review of Becoming Who I Was here.

Other options on the doc front include shorts spotlighting female filmmakers at the Breakthroughs Film Festival and Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema Doc Soup Sundays screening of Broadway: The Golden Age, by the Legends Who Were There with a Q&A by Michael Rubinoff, producer of the award-winning Broadway hit Come from Away. Mr. Rogers doc Won’t You Be My Neighbour?, finally, expands its good cheer in additional cities.
