Docs Opening in Canada this Week (June 1 - 7)

Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami

By Pat Mullen

Grace Jones might have just turned 70, but the musician and style icon seems timeless. Director Sophie Fiennes provides an intoxicating impression of Jones in the new documentary Grace Jones: BLoodlight and Bami, which hits theatres after kicking off the TIFF Docs programme at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival. (Read our chat with Sophie Fiennes here.) The doc looks at Jones’s work, life, and music by methodically cross-cutting scenes of a new concert (shot just for the production), images of her home life in Jamaica, and behind the scenes peeks at the diva guzzling champagne and shucking oysters while readying her next album. “Fiennes draws upon a decade’s worth of material she amassed following Jones, so the range of coverage and snippets of Jones’s life is impressive,” we wrote in our review at TIFF. “Fiennes doesn’t try to put the icon into a box, but instead offers enough material to provide a sense of what Jones is like as both a person and a performer.” Read the POV review of Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami here.

Vancouverites can catch this year’s DOXA opener The Rankin File: Legacy of a Radical when it enjoys some encore theatrical screenings starting Friday at Vancity Theatre. The film revisits the hard fought 1986 municipal election in which frontrunner Harry Rankin was trounced by rival Gordon Campbell, the effect of which is still being felt today as many of the causes in Rankin’s campaign, such as public space and tenants’ rights, are under siege as the city is increasingly hijacked by developers. “Using a mix of archival footage and new interviews, the film charts the career of the earnest lawyer, scrappy city councillor, and small-s socialist,” we wrote in our review at DOXA. “[Rankin’s] just causes, passion for underdogs, and social consciousness are universal traits for doc fans to admire in a leader.” Read the POV review of The Rankin File here.

It’s no secret that the world is changing. Temperatures and waters rise as glaciers melt and storms brew. Directors Nova Ami and Velcrow Ripper offer a poem for the planet in Metamorphosis, a new NFB release that offers a visually striking look at a world in transition. The film charts the globe visiting locales such as Milan, Phoenix, and LA, drinking up visual evidence for climate change and taking in the perspectives of those who fight for change. Stay tuned for Marc Glassman’s interview with directors Nova Ami and Velcrow Ripper!
