Docs Opening in Canada this Week (July 6-12)

The Oslo Diaries

By Pat Mullen

Discover an engrossing chapter of history in the Canadian co-pro The Oslo Diaries. This film from directors Mor Loushy and Daniel Sivan dives into the story of the long road to peace for Israel and Palestine. The doc mixes archival footage with new interviews and unearthed diary entries to give an engaging account of the negotiations for the Oslo Accords in the 1990s. As high-ranking representatives meet in secret, share their thoughts in personal diaries—the only records of the talks—and reflect upon their negotiations in the interviews, the film weaves past and present to ask why communities so easily choose violence and make peace the harder option. “This engrossing and thorough doc takes audiences through the corridors of history to learn about the backroom talks and private thoughts that brought this corner of the world to the precipice of peace,” we wrote in our review of the film. “As divides widen worldwide between progressives and conservatives, and as tensions rise with growing migration that the ensuing nationalism and xenophobia it breeds, the significance of The Oslo Diaries resonates strongly.” Read the POV review of The Oslo Diaries here.

People come and people go, but nobody stays at the Carlyle Hotel! The celebrated hotspot of the rich and famous gets a doc profile from the director of Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorfs. Matthew Miele interviews an A-list guest list of stars who recount their favourite memories of the swanky New York hotel. Interviewees include George Clooney, Anjelica Huston, Wes Anderson, and the late Anthony Bourdain (RIP), along with the chipper staff who ensure every stay is perfection. Check back soon for the POV review of the film!
