Docs Opening in Canada this Week (July 20-26)

Letter from Masanjia

By Pat Mullen

If you thought Three Identical Strangers had a wild story, wait until you see Letter from Masanjia! This audience favourite from Hot Docs recounts the amazing story of an S.O.S. letter tucked away in a cheap Halloween decoration from China. The customer, American Julie Keith, takes an interest in this urgent letter and lands the help of director Leon Lee and together they follow the clues to Sun Yi in China and his extraordinary story of surviving a labour prison. “Letter from Masanjia straddles the modes of docu-thriller and human rights film as Lee contrasts Yi’s experience in the prison with the post-release hell he endures,” we wrote in our review of the film. Get an immersive crash course in film history with Hitler’s Hollywood. This informative and carefully assembled doc surveys the era of Nazi propaganda during which Hitler, Joseph Goebbels, and company pulled the masses into the ideology of the Third Reich through the movies. “Hitler’s Hollywood is as thorough and informative as a Master Class seminar, if as dry as Melba toast, and the collage of classic images presentssnippets of film history that are both beautiful and unsettling,” we wrote in our review of the film. “The doc navigates film history to articulate an informative reminder on the necessity of media literacy.” Read the POV review of Hitler’s Hollywood here.

This week also sees the expansion of Whitney and a modest increase for Three Identical Strangers, while Mr. Rogers holds strong and Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema features a free screening of Which Way Home on Saturday one-nighters of Mistaken for Strangers and Anote’s Ark.
