Expo 67: Mission Impossible

By Pat Mullen

Celebration is the attitude for many Canadians this year, and Expo 67: Mission Impossible plays Tom Cruise with the last major milestone prior to the sesquicentennial. Before there was Canada 150, there was Expo 67, which spawned its own mania for strange art pieces and grandiose displays of national pride. The film mines the collection at Library and Archives Canada to find the bits and pieces of some 80,000 documents and snippets of testimony to create a portrait of the forces behind Expo 67. With all this celebrating, however, there’s bound to be some drama. “Canadians can be justifiably proud,” writes Bruce Demara in The Toronto Star. “But put the flags down and just watch an engrossing and well-executed documentary.”

Archival fans get two scoops of ice cream this week with the release of the presidential pic The Reagan Show. This portrait of the actor-turned-president culls together archival materials from newsreels, media segments, and footage from the White House. It might not be Our Nixon in terms of style and sense of humour, but the film shows how the aura of celebrity shaped a media personality as a charismatic and presidential figure during the pre-reality show days. “What you see in these videos,” writes A.O. Scott at The New York Times, “is mostly what you might remember or expect. The president seems like an affable, charming man, at once comfortable in his own skin and oddly detached from his surroundings, with a ready supply of quips, quotes, and anecdotes to defuse whatever tension or discomfort might be hovering in the air.”

This relatively quiet week also sees expanded releases for Step and An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power.
