Docs Opening in Canada this Week (Aug. 10-16)

Cielo

By Pat Mullen

There are stars a-plenty in this week’s lone documentary opener Cielo. Alison McAlpine’s profoundly poetic gaze to the stars truly needs to be seen on the big screen. Cielo takes audiences to the Atacama Desert in Chile where McAlpine’s cameras capture starry nights that too few people can see in their own backyards. The majestic images of Cielo come with philosophical musings as McAlpine talks with the scientists who helm the local observatories and the residents who live beneath the bright skies. Read more about Cielo in our interview with Alison McAlpine!

Also playing on the doc front is an encore of Gurrumul in Vancouver, a Winnipeg run of The Oslo Diaries, an expansion for McQueen, and Hot Docs’ Game Changers series, which features everyone from Marilyn Monroe to Harvey Milk to Laurie Anderson’s dog Lolabelle.
