Docs Opening in Canada this Week (Apr. 14-20)
By Pat Mullen
This week is all about supporting Canadian films! As we approach National Canadian Film Day on Wednesday, April 19, POV wants to remind doc fans to do their civic duty by getting out there and watching a Canadian film. Check here for screenings around you, and remember that one can watch a Canadian film anywhere on April 19 thanks to the help of broadcasters, streaming sites, mobile apps, etc. Doc fans looking for something different may join POV for a special conversation on documentary as Canada’s national art form at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema. This event features the launch of POV #105, our biggest issue ever devoted to the history of Canadian documentary, which is presented with the generous support of Reel Canada. Get event details here!
Doc fans looking to practice their support for Canadian films this weekend may check out Nick de Pencier’s Black Code at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema and Vancity Theatre, or Michael Melski’s Perfume War at select Cineplex locations. (Read the POV interview with Michael Melski here.) Perfume War shares Barb Stegemann’s philosophy of retail activism as she betters the lives of farmers around the world by encouraging sustainable products, and film fans may take a cue of inspiration and grab a ticket to either (or both) of these new Canadian films.
