Docs Opening in Canada this Week (Apr. 13-19)

Abu

By Pat Mullen

Arshad Khan’s Abu returns for a theatrical release in Toronto and Montreal after screening at The Royal in Toronto for a few days last winter and enjoying several one-offs and festivals. The film is Khan’s personal story of coming out and how being gay had an impact on his relationship with his father, a devout Muslim. “As is often the case with first-person documentaries or memoirs, Abu meant exploring every aspect of Khan’s childhood, however uncomfortable those might be,” wrote Matt Hays while profiling Abu. “It is powerful and at times emotionally challenging to watch.” Read more about Abu in The Family Ties that Bind.

Doc fans can practice their runway strut before Hot Docs at the final Doc Soup screening ahead of this year’s festival. Sunday’s Doc Soup serves up Manolo: The Boy Who Made Shoes for Lizards about famed shoe designer Manolo Blahnik. The weatherman might be calling for rainboots this weekend, but why not splash in the puddles in style with this doc that interviews the rich and famous to illuminate the chic style of a contemporary favourite? “Sure, there are plenty of headshots of famous fashionistas, from Vogue’s Anna Wintour and André Leon Talley to Rihanna and Karlie Kloss, hymning the perfection of his pumps, mules and kitten heels,” writes Leslie Felperin at The Guardian, “but there’s also a proper appreciation of his craftsmanship, skill and depth of historical knowledge.”
