Docs Screening in Canada this Week (June 24-30)
By Pat Mullen
It’s a quieter week on the doc front. The seven days before the long weekend have only one or two new docs opening on the Canadian front. One premiere of which Toronto audiences will want to take note is Larry Weinstein’s wonderful and intimate profile Leslie Caron: The Reluctant Star, which debuts at the Lightbox on Tuesday. Weinstein will be on hand to chat about his experience filming the star of Gigi and An American in Pars. Check back soon to catch POV’s interview with Weinstein in which he elaborates on the pleasure of working with Caron, talks about the possibility of a star system in Canada, and reflects on his career as a whole.
Torontonians can also take pride in Kami Chisholm’s Pride Denied: Homonationalism and the Future of Queer Politics, which screens Friday at Cinema Politica. Winnipeg audiences, on the other hand, can root for the home team when Isiah Medina’s acclaimed 88:88 screens at the Winnipeg Cinematheque. This experimental feature is a recent Canuck highlight from the festival circuit that meditates on form and time.
On the international front, the wild, wacky jaw-dropper Tickled becomes the first film to open at the newly christened Ted Rogers Hot Docs Cinema. (Review here.) The ‘Ted’ also hosts its first Doc Soup Sunday with The Pulitzer at 100, if literary types and doc fans want to brush up on the prestigious prize. Over in Montreal, RIDM presents the new Frank Zappa doc at Cinema du Parc on Thursday. Finally, fans of Finding Vivian Maier will want to catch a second take on the street photographer when The Vivian Maier Mystery screens at Camera Bar on Saturday in conjunction with Stephen Bulger Gallery’s spotlight of Maier’s work.
