Docs Screening in Canada this Week (June 10-16)

KONELĪNE: our land beautiful

By Pat Mullen

The upcoming week in docs throws down the gauntlet for Canadian film fans. The next seven days offer an intimidating range of Can Con.

This year’s winner for Best Canadian Feature at Hot Docs, Nettie Wild’s KONELĪNE: our land beautiful, starts its theatrical run at the Bloor and kicks off what’s bound to be a lengthy tour of the Canuck circuit. For facilitating ticket purchases, the title is pronounced kon-a-leen-a. Asking for one ‘cone-line’ might yield a conga line of ice cream. For an extra scoop, POV editor Marc Glassman calls the film ‘stunningly beautiful’ in his review of the doc.

Doc fans looking to tap their toes might want to catch Daniel Cross’s I am the Blues, which expands its run to include Coburg, Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, and Winnipeg with additional cities to come. We’re such big fans of the doc that we reviewed it not once but twice!

If one caught both KONELĪNE and I am the Blues at Hot Docs, there’s also the Canuck theatrical debut of Ada Usphiz’s stimulating and meticulously researched Vita Activa: The Spirit of Hannah Arendt. Fans of the 2013 drama about Arendt will especially want to catch this immersive look at her complex work and character.

Outside of the Canadian content, TIFF Lightbox offers a new doc about the legacy of Shakespeare on film as part of the Bard’s 400th anniversary celebrations. The Lightbox also has a series on the hybrid films of Roberto Minervini, which includes his new film The Other Side. The docudrama screens in Ottawa at The Mayfair, too, which is a safe distance from the nasty sinkhole making headlines. No sign of the capybaras yet, but KONELĪNE seems right up their alley.
