CUFF Docs opens with Zappa

The Calgary Underground Film Festival announced its 2020 line-up for CUFF Docs. Like many of the regional festivals this season, CUFF is expanding both its scale and presence as activities shift online amid the pandemic. This year’s CUFF Docs includes 18 feature documentaries, 13 of which will screen in theatres, with additional docs and shorts screening online. The virtual screenings will be available to audiences across Alberta, while in-theatre events are subject to the province’s health and safety regulations.

“With so many great films to choose from this year, we thought the hybrid model was a great opportunity for us to expand the festival,” said festival director and lead programmer Brenda Lieberman in a statement from CUFF Docs. “We could have kept going – the diversity of films, and stories were endless, but we have selected a great variety of gems for doc fans.”

CUFF Docs opens with Zappa, an archival portrait of rocker Frank Zappa from director Alex Winter (The Panama Papers). The film headlines the festival’s in-theatre events. Also notable among the CUFF Docs selections is the Calgary premiere of Marc Serpa Francoeur and Robinder Uppal’s No Visible Trauma, which expands upon their CBC doc Above the Law and offers an incisive study of police brutality in Calgary. The festival marks the film’s first public screening with a local audience, which should prove one of CUFF Docs’ more explosive events.
