Maxima opens this year’s ReFrame Film Festival

By Pat Mullen

Catch some of the most acclaimed documentaries from the circuit at this year’s ReFrame Film Festival. Running January 23 to 26 in Peterborough, ReFrame offers four days of documentary programming with stories from the local, national, and international levels. Docs in the line-up include The Hottest August, This Is Not a Movie, One Child Nation, Toxic Beauty, nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up, and Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and the Band.

This year’s festival kicks off January 23 with a screening of Maxima, the film that took Hot Docs by storm and scooped the Audience Award as the festival favourite. The film tells the story of Máxima Acuña, a Peruvian subsistence farmer who takes on a mining corporation when a new development threatens her way of life. At a time when individuals are often left to take on the powers that be on their own, Maxima offers an inspiring cri de cœur for audiences to join the fight. Read more about Maxima in Maurie Alioff’s review from Hot Docs.
