Book Launch: ‘Shooting from the East: Filmmaking on the Canadian Atlantic’
By Pat Mullen
Toronto readers may attend a special celebration of Atlantic Canadian film with the launch of the book Shooting from the East: Filmmaking on the Canadian Atlantic. This new book by Darrell Varga (author of John Walker’s Passage) comes from McGill-Queen’s University Press and offers a critical history of the Atlantic film scene from its rise in the 1970s. “This latest book is eagerly anticipated by an industry that has taken quite a pummeling from NS Government cuts, but is struggling to its feet,” says Chuck Lapp, Chair of the DOC Atlantic branch of the Documentary Organization of Canada. “After all, the film industry here is over 100 years old and will rebuild after the political hurricane that hit us recently.”
The book launch for Shooting from the East happens on Sunday, February 7 at TIFF Lightbox at 1:00 PM. The event includes a screening of Allan Moyle’s film New Waterford Girl, which received seven Canadian Genie nominations including Best Motion Picture, with select cast members in attendance. Admission is free.
